Our conscious and subconscious perceptions of life define everything we think we are and experience in our lives. There are two ways of looking at life: either life is vibrant and alive, or it’s nothing more than a collection of random mechanical impulses.
It’s as if there are two groups of people, and we’ve all been in one or the other group at some point in our lives. The first group believes that life is mysterious, dangerous, and unpredictable. You never know what will happen next, and anything could happen at any moment. Those in the first group like their routine. It gives them a sense of safety, and the hope is that if they stick to their daily routines, they won’t have to face too many changes. Change is not welcome in their lives because they never know what it will bring, and they have little trust in an unpredictable, mysterious life that’s difficult enough to understand, let alone master.
Then there’s the other group. Those in this group also see life as a mystery. They know it can be unpredictable, but they’re aware that the only constant in life is change itself. This awareness that life is ever changing makes them curious, open, and willing to understand and learn about the mystery of life. Deep down, they intuitively sense that the mysterious force that drives and directs this life is somehow connected to their own selves. In their quest to understand the workings of the Life Force, they’re willing to step outside their comfort zone and to recognize that routine is only good as it’s necessary. This group includes the seekers, the adventurers, the thinkers, the mystics, the innovators, the leaders, and the creators.
The world is changing rapidly, and it’s encouraging to see fewer and fewer people in the first group and that even those in the first group are increasingly being guided towards paths that will eventually bring them into the second group. It’s as if the collective consciousness is raising, shifting, and awakening something deep within us all.
Whichever group we’re in, when we find ourselves in a situation where we don’t know where to turn or which path to take, we need to listen closely to the whisperings of the intuitive voice of wisdom. The inner wisdom and intuitive voice that come from our hearts can guide us to our highest good. When we stifle this intuitive voice, a gentle knocking will follow. If we miss or resist the gentle knocking, then the Life Force will send us a loud rattle to make sure we hear it. What strikes me most is that even those in the first group will at some point experience one or more events that will push them towards the realization that there’s more to life than just sticking to "the good old ways” of doing things or hiding behind a routine.

When our routines are interrupted, the experience redefines our lives and challenges our beliefs. It forces us to re-examine both who we are and our relationship with life, to uncover a deeper meaning to our existence. We usually discover that we there’s more to us than we thought, that we have inner gifts that matter, that we have a place and a purpose in this world. We may find that what we believe to be our “I” or “self” is connected to a much vaster part of life, that life has a deeper meaning, and that the creative Life Force is profoundly connected to our own selves. And as our connection to everything in this world is re-established, we will be able to walk through the gate of perception into an altogether different reality—a kinder, more caring reality, where time runs differently and miracles occur naturally.
Before we can do that, though, we need to summon the courage to leave the old behind and give up the beliefs that no longer serve us. Most of us have been taught that it’s useful to follow the rules. We were told that if we followed certain set rules—like brushing our teeth, going to school, getting good grades, getting a good job, and getting married—that life would just work itself out. Society led us to believe that there was only one way to live our lives and that if we followed that way, we would be happy, and fulfilled. This teaching has become so widely accepted and unquestioned that it now underlies much of human motivation and behavior, and over time, we have created entire systems to help us feel safe within the rules, safe from the “unknown dangers” of life.
Yet for most of my clients and for myself as well, this has never been the case. For no matter how tall the fortress or thick the walls of our beliefs and routines, no matter how strong the system of human design, the Life energy will always find a way to come through and create chaos where before there was order so that change can happen. It’s as if this change is a wakeup call, an invitation to awaken from the stories that no longer hold the truth, to outgrow them and step into the truth of our being, to recognize the higher purpose of our existence here on this earth and align with the inner design. When we do this, we ultimately realign with the reality of Life and Living.
